Tyneside Outdoors (TO) aims to help people living in disadvantaged areas of Tyneside to access the outdoors and to use it for their learning, development, health and enjoyment.
TO currently provides outdoor youth work activities in Newcastle upon Tyne in Walker Park in the east of the city and with our West End Outdoors Youth Group in Scotswood and Benwell. We’re also delivering youth work in Temple Memorial Park, South Shields, where we’re researching and rediscovering a 1980’s BMX Dirt Track.
TO provides a range of out-of-doors activities that help young people to get active and enjoy the outdoors. Whilst we love to get up mountains and canoe down rivers, our weekly activities involve activities that are easily repeated in many outdoor spaces. Our young people often simply say "we do stuff outdoors", anything from Frisbee at the beach or park, to cycling, kicky rounders, or even Foogby - football rules but played with a rugby ball. The aim is to enjoy a wide range of activities in a wide range of places, helping to embed the enjoyment of the outdoors before aiming to conquer mountains.
All our activities are supported by Youth Workers whose aim is to support the young people's learning and development as well as their enjoyment.
